Open Access Week 2022 • Open for Climate Justice

Written by

Confronting the climate crisis requires rapid knowledge exchange across geographical and economic boundaries, as well as among various scientific disciplines. In line with this, this year's Open Access Week aims to foster connections and collaboration between the climate movement and the international open science community. This is an opportunity to come together, take action, and raise awareness about how openness contributes to climate justice.

Given that this year's Open Access Week theme directly concerns all of us, the Center for Scientific Information is excited to mark Open Access Week 2022 with various events at the Institute for its employees and the broader public.

The live events are designed to cater to the needs of scientists:

Short Educational Seminars (hrv. Kratki edukacijski seminrai, KEKS):

26.10.2022., 11h - Lovorka Čaja, "Less Scary DMP"

27.10.2022., 13-15h - 152nd Colloquium of the Center for Scientific Information in honor of Open Access Week - "Don't Tell Me a Story About Climate Justice"

28.10.2022., 11h - Bojan Macan, "Open Licenses - the path to Open Science!"

The main event titled "Don't just talk about Climate Justice"

will take place on Thursday, October 27, 2022, from 1 PM to 3 PM, in the auditorium of the 3rd wing at the Ruđer Bošković Institute. It will be in the form of a panel discussion and will address 3 themes:

  1. How does open access contribute to the development and spread of climate literacy?
  2. Can we expect change without the involvement of policy and the morals of every individual?
  3. Libraries as bridges between science and the public and their role in facilitating knowledge exchange.

Speakers who have recognized the importance of such an event and responded to our invitation to participate will attempt to answer these questions from their areas of expertise:

  • Neda Adamović, Petar Preradović Library Bjelovar
  • Nikola Biliškov, Ruđer Bošković Institute/McGill University/Scientists for Climate
  • Jelena Godrijan, Ruđer Bošković Institute
  • Melinda Grubišić Reiter, Juraj Šižgorić Library Šibenik
  • Tihana Lončarić, Petar Preradović Library Bjelovar
  • Tomislav Medak, Institute for Political Ecology
  • Jelena Puđak, Ivo Pilar Institute/Scientists for Climate

If you can't attend physically, you can follow the lecture via the Zoom platform. We invite you to join the discussion on the interconnection between open access and climate justice, as well as possible steps for their development.

Every day is an opportunity to change the world around us. One of the goals of Open Access Week 2022 is to stimulate discussion about current concepts related to climate justice, climate literacy, and open access as a tool for better understanding and acting against climate change.

Remember, "a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step!" - Lao-Tse

P.S. In addition to the main program, we've prepared fun activities for our Ruđerovci (employees of Ruđer Bošković Institute), which you can learn more about via TV screens, so stay tuned!
