Scholarship in the Promotion & Tenure Review Process: Challenges for Librarians as Applicants & Reviewers

eg1

54. kolokvij Knjižnice IRB-a: SCHOLARSHIP IN THE PROMOTION & TENURE REVIEW PROCESS: CHALLENGES FOR LIBRARIANS AS APPLICANTS & REVIEWERS

Tenure and promotion decisions are critical to institutions and individual faculty members alike. Academic librarians are no strangers to the promotion and tenure review process. Half of all academic librarians in the U.S. are tenured. Scholarship is the most challenging hurdle in the review process for library and other faculty. In this session participants will discuss their experiences in the review of scholarship as applicants and as members of review committees. We will explore a potential role for librarians to assist candidates for promotion and tenure to measure scholarship through the use of readily available databases and websites.

Several questions will be addressed among them:

1. How does the review of librarians. scholarship differ from the review of other disciplines?

2. Are there ways of measuring scholarship that can be applied across disciplines?

3. How can librarians find measures of journal articles, books, and other forms of publication and scholarship?

The organizer will share insights from an on-going, long-term project to create an extensive set of measures for use in the scholarship review process. He has given presentations on the topic to faculty and administrators at Seton Hall University, to academic librarians in New Jersey, and to library/information studies students and faculty at Humboldt University in Berlin.
